Seven warning signs

A well-functioning roof is vital to the integrity of your home. It’s the protection from harsh weather, moisture, and debris that the rest of your home depends on. Even if your roof is currently in good shape, there are some warning signs to watch for down the road that will tell you it’s time to look into a roof replacement for your Long Island home.

1. Water Damage in Your Attic

If your attic has peeling paint on the walls and ceiling or brown and yellow water stains running down them, you could have a big problem going on with your roof. Once you spot possible roof damage like this, call a professional roofer to take a look A.S.A.P.

A roofing inspection could save you a lot of money if a professional is able to check out a problem before the damage migrates to more of the house. A roofing expert will have the know-how and tools necessary to really look at the problem and get on the roof for a better inspection. They’ll then be able to determine if it’s time to replace your roof.

2. The Age of Your Roof

Is your existing roof more than 20 years old? If so, depending on the material, it could really be showing its age. If you’re not sure when your roof was installed, there should be some home improvement records you can look at to find out. Here’s a look at what kind of lifespan you can expect from different roofing materials:

  • Asphalt shingle roof – 20-30 years
  • Metal roof – 30-50 years
  • Clay tiles – 40 years

It’s important to note that if your current roof was installed on top of the previous one, there are several different layers, or it is older than 20 years old, you are most likely going to need a roof replacement for your Long Island home.

3. A Sagging or Droopy Roof

A sagging or droopy roof is more than just a warning sign, it’s a clear indication of moisture getting in underneath the roof and rotting the boards, causing sagging and drooping. If this is happening to your roof, you need a roof replacement immediately before even more damage occurs to your home.

If you’re not sure if sagging is happening to your roof, stand back from your home to get a good look from all angles and sides. A1 Roofing has experience inspecting and giving honest feedback on the condition of your roof. If you do notice sagging, don’t wait to call a professional.

4. Roof Damage from High Winds or Major Storms

Depending on where you live, high winds, harsh storms, and hail damage could cause regular roof damage each year. If you know you live in an area like this, make sure to spend extra time checking on your roof after potentially-damaging weather..

Look for damaged shingles that have begun to curl or break after a big storm or windy day. If you spot some problems, you may need an inspection done on the rest of your roof to check for additional issues. You could literally be saving yourself thousands of dollars by doing regular inspections. However, you will likely hit a point where a full roof replacement becomes necessary.

5. Damaged Flashing or Light Coming Through the Roof

If you spot damaged flashing or light coming through the roof during your inspections, it needs immediate attention. Flashing is there to protect your home from the elements. If some cracks or leaks appear, your home is no longer being safeguarded. And if you see flashes of light, this is even more urgent!

6. Moss and Other Growths

Moss and other natural growths can happen fast if proper care isn’t taken to maintain, clean, and cut it back. Different growths can even make their way inside your home if you’re not careful. If you find moss on your roof, it can be removed and treated easily. If there is too much overgrowth, you may be facing a roof replacement.

7. Cracks, Curling, Buckling, or Missing Shingles

Damaged or missing shingles are common signs that your roof needs attention. If there are cracked or curling shingles, there could be even more going on than you first see. Talk to a professional roofing company to thoroughly inspect it and make sure that there isn’t any damage that has been done underneath the shingles, and then fix the issues sooner than later.
